Pipe painting area & volume calculator
Outer surface area for painting, coating and insulation, and internal volume for hydrotest water — for a single size or a whole list of pipe.
Painting area (outer)—
Water volume—
Insulation outer area—
Outer area = π × OD × L. Volume = π/4 × ID² × L. With insulation, cladding area uses OD + 2 × insulation thickness. Add 10–15% for fittings and supports.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the painting area of a pipe?
Multiply π × outside diameter (m) × length (m). A 6 inch pipe (OD 168.3 mm) has 0.529 m² per metre.
How much water to hydrotest a pipeline?
Internal volume = π/4 × ID² × length; e.g. 100 m of 6 inch Sch 40 holds about 1.86 m³.
