Pipe weight formula

Weight per metre equals the steel cross-section multiplied by density: π × (OD − t) × t × ρ. With OD and t in millimetres and the density of carbon steel at 7.85 g/cm³, this simplifies to (OD − t) × t × 0.02466 kg/m. To get pounds per foot, multiply kg/m by 0.672.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 6 inch Schedule 40 pipe weigh?

About 28.26 kg per metre (around 19.0 lb/ft) for carbon steel.

How do I calculate stainless steel pipe weight?

Use the same formula with the stainless density: (OD − t) × t × 0.02466 × (7.93 / 7.85) for 304, or the calculator on this site.

How do I convert kg/m to lb/ft?

Multiply kg/m by 0.672. For example 28.26 kg/m is about 18.99 lb/ft.
