Formulas used

Pipe: π × (OD − t) × t × ρ ÷ 1000 kg/m. Plate: width × thickness × ρ ÷ 1000 kg/m (per metre of length). Round bar: π/4 × D² × ρ ÷ 1000 kg/m. Flat bar: width × thickness × ρ ÷ 1000 kg/m. Dimensions in mm, density ρ in g/cm³. Results are theoretical; mill tolerances can change actual weight by a few percent.

Frequently asked questions

What density should I use for SS 316L?

7.98 g/cm³ is the commonly used value for 316/316L; 7.93 g/cm³ for 304/304L.

How do I calculate plate weight?

Length (m) × width (mm) × thickness (mm) × density ÷ 1000 gives kg. A 6 m × 1500 mm × 10 mm carbon steel plate weighs about 706.5 kg.

Why does actual weight differ from calculated weight?

Mill tolerances on wall thickness and diameter, plus end finish and coatings, mean real weight can vary by several percent.
